Oswestry School Sports Tournaments
This term we have hosted two fantastic sporting events, an U12s rugby development festival and an U13 7’s competition.
The rugby development festival is now in its second year with ten teams taking part. This year’s competition involved four independent schools – Oswestry School, Wrekin College, Abbey Gate College and St Marys - alongside six state schools – The Marches, Ysgol Dinas Bran, Llanfyllin High School, The Corbet, Grove School and Idsall. The festival has been developed to increase match time for those pupils who don’t normally play with each game lasting just 12 minutes and each team fielding 15 players. Participating teams have commented that the festival has provided a friendly environment where pupils have felt involved.
Our first U13’s 7’s competition was developed following on from the loss of the weight limit. It was felt that this was unfair and dangerous for smaller schools and, as a result, the competition had a weight limit of 59kg. The competition involved 8 teams, Oswestry School, Ysgol Dinas Bran, Wrekin College, Packwood Haugh, the Marches, St Martins, St Marys and Wolverhampton Grammar School. Following the initial group stage the competition progressed into a knockout with a plate and cup competition. Wrekin College won the Cup final against The Marches while in the Plate, Packwood Haugh beat Wolverhampton on a golden try.
