Oswestry School Pupils Run Workshops for Shrewsbury Abbey Open Door Event

A team of music scholars and pupils here at Oswestry have recently taken part in the Shrewsbury Abbey Open Door project by volunteering their time to direct workshops for Year 5 and 6 children from local primary schools.

Open Door in the Abbey is an annual event held over a period of 3 days and is accessible to primary schools across Shropshire. The project is in its fourteenth year having been founded in 2001.

The theme for this year was ‘The Prodigal Son’ and Oswestry School’s pupils led participating children in creating original songs based around the theme. Charlotte Garton, one of the school’s music scholars said, “It was exciting and fun teaching the children”. Each pupil who volunteered at the workshop found it a valuable leadership experience and came away feeling inspired having supported local children.

Oswestry School’s Director of Music, Mr Julian Cattley, said “We thank all those at Shrewsbury Abbey who helped and supported our pupil’s work and we have received very positive feedback from the children who participated during the project”.
