70 Years of Holbache Boarding House
Old Oswestrian Dr Alston Kennerley (1947-51) joined Oswestry School as one of the very first boarders in Holbache Boarding House when it was opened 70 years ago in 1947.
The building, formerly Oswestry Cottage Hostpital, was vacated in 1939 when the Oswestry & District Hospital opened in Upper Brook Street. The school acquired the building and in 1947 Holbache House was born offering places to an initial 16 boys.
Alston has written a memoir of his time at Oswestry School as one of these first Holbache boys called 'Welsh Walls to Upper Brook Street and Back - Six Walks a Day'. Do take the time to read it, it is a fascinating glimpse into a world so very far removed from current school experiences. Thank you Alston.
