Founder's Weekend 2014 Sporting Fixtures

Once again we had an enjoyable afternoon of sport at this year's Founders Day, and were very lucky with the weather!  The high level of support shown to both teams was great to see, spectator numbers were exceptional.  Thanks to all the people involved with organising the matches and giving their time to umpire.

Thank you also to OO Victoria Whittingham for the netball and hockey match reports.  She encourages any OOs who are thinking about coming back to play to do so and take part in these fixtures, "It is a lovely event and great way to reconnect with the school".  Finally, thanks to all the OOs who dug out their sports kit for the annual games.

Netball - The OOs were met by a formidable school team who played a very quick game. Despite a strong turnout of OOs, we were somewhat lacking in shooters which cost us in the end. Our strength in defence lead to some good centre-court play but we struggled to convert these opportunities into goals. Thanks must go to all who put themselves up for the challenge on the day despite never having played in the circle before - a special mention must go to Becky Adcock and Georgie Mercer for their efforts in the D - there were some excellent goals.  Congratulations to the School team, who secured a convincing 26-2 victory!

Hockey - The match was once again fast paced and hard work for both teams. Playing without goalkeepers meant that action in the circle was fast and furious. We had a fantastic start as we quickly put one in the back of the net. We were carried by a strong up-front team who gave the school defenders a good run around. We were happy with having kept the score to 3-3, before the school team put two goals away in the last 5 minutes, leaving us with a somewhat disappointing loss of 5-3. Despite the score, I was very impressed with how the OOs played, we didn't make it easy for the school and put up a very respectable fight. It was a great game from both sides.

Football - The OO team beat the School's 1st XI 2-1, and 2nd XI 1-0.  Well done OOs!  This match also featured one of our favourite moments from the weekend, with four generations of Woodwards (all Oswestrians) involved in the football.  Son, father and grandfather all appeared on the pitch, and great grandfather watched from the sidelines.

Shooting - The OO team retained the cup this year, but the result was much closer than last year.  Well done all!

Looking forward to next year!
